Letting Go: Completing the Year of the Snake with Intention

by Elizabeth

There are many ways—and many moments—to mark a beginning.

Depending on how you look at it, the “New Year” arrives at very different times.

The Winter Solstice in December reminds us that the light is returning.

January 1st has marked the beginning of the calendar year in the Western world since 1582.

Human Design places the New Year around January 22.

The Lunar/ Chinese New Year begins in February. This year, on February 17th.

Western astrology tells us the yearly cycle begins with Aries season in March.

I love this layering of timelines. It gives us permission to begin again more than once—and just as importantly, it gives us permission to end things gradually and intentionally.

As we arrive at the final week of the Year of the Snake, we are standing in a powerful threshold. In Chinese tradition, the snake is associated with shedding, wisdom, intuition, and deep inner transformation. Snakes don’t rush their growth; they release what no longer fits, one layer at a time.

We are preparing to enter the Year of the Fire Horse, a year associated with movement, momentum, and inspired action. But before we go forward, there is an important invitation here: completion.

A Pause for Reflection

If you’re feeling the urge to move ahead—but also a sense of heaviness, fatigue, or resistance—this may be why. Unfinished business, unprocessed emotion, or outdated patterns can quietly weigh us down.

So, before we step into what’s next, I invite you to pause.

Grab your journal. Take a few slow breaths. And ask yourself:

  1. What have I had to let go of this year?
  2. What emotions have arisen as a result?
  3. How might I practice better self-care for myself moving forward?
  4. What opportunities have shown up for me this year?
  5. What am I grateful for in this moment, despite all the ups and downs?

There is no right or wrong way to answer these questions. Simply acknowledging your experiences helps to process them.

What Are You Ready to Let Go Of?

Then, ask yourself one final question: What am I ready to release right now?

You might be ready to let go of:

Physical clutter

Stacks of paper. Books you don’t need. Old art projects. Clothes that no longer fit.

E-clutter

Outdated client files. Abandoned projects. Thousands of unread emails. Apps you no longer use.

Bad habits

Too much social media. Too much chocolate. Too little sleep. Too little movement.

Limiting beliefs

Not good enough. Not attractive enough. Not smart enough. Not successful enough

Social patterns

Rarely seeing friends. Even rarer date nights. Limited quality time with your children. Never enough “me time.”

Spiritual disconnection

A lack of gratitude. A focus on the negative. Little time to pray or meditate. Feeling disconnected from your Higher Power.

Emotional weight

Fears about upcoming transitions. Conflict with loved ones. Anxiety about world events. Worry about struggles your children are facing.

Letting go doesn’t mean bypassing grief or minimizing what mattered. It means acknowledging what has been—and choosing not to carry it forward in the same way.

Making Space for What’s Next

In my coaching sessions, clients often send me reflections outlining their celebrations, their challenges, and their gratitudes. From there, we work together to identify what is complete—and what wants to emerge next.

Often, moving forward requires letting go first. Creating space is not passive; it is an active, courageous practice. It’s how we honor the wisdom of the Snake while preparing for the forward momentum of the Fire Horse.

If you find yourself at a threshold—ready for change but unsure how to release what’s behind you—you don’t have to navigate it alone.

This is the work I love: helping people gently complete cycles, integrate lessons, and take inspired action toward what’s calling them next.

If you’re feeling ready to let go—and curious about what wants to come forward—I’d love to support you.
