Reconnecting with My 17-Year-Old Self

by Elizabeth

Last week, I shared a post on Facebook that got a lot of reactions and feedback. I think it’s because I shared from the heart something that I suspect a lot of us struggle with. Adulting is hard (work demands, family responsibilities, caregiving others, financial worries, health challenges, etc.) and we lose some of the magic from our childhood. Reconnecting with those lost parts is an important part of healing and expressing our whole selves in this world. I’m grateful I’ve been able to do that with my handmade gift line and jewelry at Sacred Celebrations.

Here’s my post if you missed it:

youthful-elizabethToday is Small Businesses Saturday. This picture popped up in my feed the other day and I’ve been thinking about this girl a lot. Growing up, she was really creative and did all sorts of arts and crafts for fun. She did beautiful cross stitching, learned how to knit, made jewelry, designed hair bows, played piano, danced and so many other things. Her first job was in a jewelry store where she loved educating customers about gemstones and helping them choose the perfect gifts for loved ones. But then somewhere along the way, she got the idea that she wasn’t creative. She learned to find rewards in academics and volunteering and friendships and marriage and parenthood and she stopped creating art all together. She went on to build a successful coaching business (22 years and counting!) and just last year, after surgery that sidelined her for a few months and a friend sent her a dragonfly bead as a tiny talisman, she started making art again. And she is soooooo happy! An entire line of jewelry and ritual kits has been born and she’s deriving such joy out of serving the world with talismans and gifts that have magic and meaning. So today, on Small Business Saturday, this girl who never in a million years dreamed that she would be a A) a business owner and B) a jewelry designer wants to celebrate her joy with you! Check the comments below for a coupon code and link to shop. And she invites you pause and reflect on *your* inner creative child. Invite him or her out to play again & see what magic unfolds! ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨

If this resonates with you, I invite you to reconnect with your childhood self.

Maybe when you were 10, you liked to make mud pies and chase butterflies. Perhaps when you were 14, you took a class in pottery and absolutely loved it. Maybe, like me, your first job at 16 sparked joy for you, but life took you in a different direction.

Consider the following questions:

  • What are the messages that I received about creativity as a child?
  • What ways did I enjoy expressing myself creatively as a kid?
  • How is creativity present in my life now as an adult?
  • What other creative ideas and avenues might be fun for me to explore?

Have fun with this and I’d love for you to comment and tell me what creative endeavors you are up to these days!

Cheers to creativity!
Elizabeth
